Major PTE Multiple Choice, Choose Multiple Answers question type features that you cannot ignore

The PTE Reading Multiple-Choice, Choose Multiple Answers tasks and multiple-choice, choose single answer tasks are quite similar. The only modification is that the length of the text is longer in Reading multiple-choice, choose multiple answers tasks for which you are required to choose more than one correct answer. Test aspirants encounter a lot of problems while attempting this task like inferring the meaning of the passages or time management, where aspirants spend too much time to choose the right answer. So to perform well, you have to practice until you feel that you may tackle this item type without any difficulty.

Most important to note here is that the Multiple Choice Choose Multiple Answers question types have negative marking. This type of negative scoring makes it all the more imperative that you choose the right answer

All that you need to know about the Multiple Choice Choose multiple Answers task

The Multiple-choice, choose multiple answers task assess only the reading skills of a person. You will generally have to attempt 2-3 questions in this task. The intention of this task is to evaluate your ability to analyze, interpret and evaluate a short text. It is a multiple choice question where you will have to read a passage and then choose more than one correct response.

While taking the test, you will find the passage on the left side of the screen which you will have to read, analyze, interpret and evaluate.Onthe right side of the screen, you will find the question followed by response options. Above the question, in the top section of the screen, you will find the instructions. The instructions are – “Read the text and answer the question by selecting all correct responses. More than one response is correct.” Be aware and understand the instructions carefully to not waste time since these instructions will remain the same for all questions in this item type.

What is the scoring patter for Multiple Choice Choose Multiple Answers Task?

The sub skills tested in this Reading section depend on the question and can be any of the following: identifying the topic, theme or main ideas; identifying the relationships between sentences and paragraphs; evaluating the quality and usefulness of texts; identifying the writers purpose, style, tone or attitude; identifying supporting points or examples; reading for overall organization and connections between pieces of information; reading for information to infer meanings or find relationships; identifying specific details, facts, opinions, definitions or sequences of events; inferring the meaning of unfamiliar words

The Reading multiple-choice task carries negative marking. You score 1 for every correct response and -1 for every incorrect response.

 

 

Strategies and tips to be followed before reading, while reading and after reading the task.

  • Before Reading

As soon as the screen for this question type opens, some test aspirants jump straight to reading the given passage or they read the question and the response options and then go on to the passage to find the information in the question. These strategies are not efficient all the time. You may choose the right answer with these strategies but you willapply too much effort and time than necessary for the task.

The passages that appear in this task are not selected randomly. They are chosen to test your reading sub-skills. So, you must first read the question to deduce the purpose of the passage. Then read the response options to understand what the passage is likely to be about. Mark the key words in the response options which will later help you look for the answers while reading the passage. Use the method of skimming and scanning to look for the approximate location where the answer is likely to be found in the passage.

  • While Reading

Once you have read the question and the response options, and you have concluded the sub skills that the question aims to test, and also the purpose of your reading along with key words; it is time to read the passage. You must always remember to read the passage with a purpose. The purpose is to figure out the sub skills that the PTE examaims to test you through that particular question. Youshould always recollect to read with a purpose to recognize the structure of the passage and to understand the generalview of the text. The objective of these purposes is to support you to recognize where in the passage the answers are likely to be found. If you feel that you are struggling to understand the passage, read it 2 or 3 times. As you read, identify and remember the areas in the passage where the keywords or their synonyms appear.

Always skim and scan to look for keywords and their synonyms. Also read the portion of the text around the keywords in detail. This strategy will help you get to at least a single correct answer. If you have not been able to identify more than one correct answer, read the question again carefully to identify the purpose and also to update your keywords. Repeat the process of skimming and scanning until you find the correct answers.

  • After Reading

After you have marked the single correct answer, it is time to evaluate the possibility of other options being correct. So read the other options one after the other. Skim and scan to look for the correct options by using the key words in the response options. Use the method of elimination to eliminate incorrect options.

You must remember that negative marking applies for this question type. So choose options as correct only when you are 100% sure of or you may lose points. Move on to the next question once you have finished answering.

The other options are incorrect because the passage says that this tourist attraction has been included into sightseeing trips only from the year 2012. The tree stump travels quite extensively and hence cannot not be claimed to be at the edge of the lake. The passage also claims that the tree stump is buoyant enough to support a person’s weight.

Scores: If you have chosen all the correct answers, you will be awarded 3 marks. If you have chosen only 2 or 1 correct answers without choosing a wrong option, you will be awarded 2 or 1 mark respectively.

You must note that if you choose a wrong option you will be given a negative mark. For example, if you choose option G along with option B and E, your score will be +1,+1 and -1(B,E,G)=1. Your final score will be 1.

Time Management: In the Reading section of the PTE Exam, you will be given an average of 15 to 20 questions to attempt within 40 minutes. So you must be aware to allocate 1.5 to 2 minutes for each question. If you consume more time, you might not be able to attempt all the questions in the Reading section which will reflect on your overall scor
