“Environmental problems are too great to be managed by individuals, so real change can be achieved at government level.”
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Support your answers with your point of view.
We have been constantly confronted with the issue of environmental degradation over the last couple of decades and ensuring its preservation for our future generations has become a major alarm.Technological and Scientific advancements along with industrialization and globalization have brought negative impacts on the environment which I believe has to be addressed immediately to curb the adverse effects. Contribution of the people to this cause is indispensable since the government alone cannot bring about any variations.
Overpopulation is one of the crucial causes that have detrimental effects on the environment. It demands more food resources, living space and others basic amenities of life and to accommodate this, large areas have been logged. Deforestation leads to depletion on natural resources like top soil, water contamination, soil and air pollution etc. Humans must adopt the methods of family planning to help sustain the environment.
Excessive use of natural resources, careless disposal of waste due to overpopulation and also an increase in the number of industries has polluted the environment. Pollution has steered the depletion of ozone layer and emission of greenhouse gases like carbon monoxide etc. which has resulted in melting of the polar ice caps and increasing climate change. To curtail this, people must strictly follow the rules of waste disposal, recycling and treatment of hazardous waste proposed by the government.
I believe people must take the initiative to set up NGOs and other private establishments as an alternative to governmental organizations. Methods like organic farming must be adopted to reduce soil contamination. People should contribute by reducing the use of automobiles which helps in bringing air pollution under control. Depletion of natural resources like fossil fuel, water and soil fertility can be reduced by following the various methods proposed by the government. Usage of renewable energy like solar power and hydroelectricity has to be encouraged to protect the ecosystem.
“Students should be required to stay in school until the age of 18”. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Support your point of view with reasons.
It is certainly true that schools play a significant role in defining a child’s character since they inculcate students with various social, moral and academic personas that enrich their life further. But in today’s competitive world, one cannot solely depend upon the skills learned in school and has to be capable with all the essential skills required to live a significant life.
Dropping out of school early doesn’t necessarily mean that a student a slow learner. It depends upon the capability of every student to understand their skills and capacities to cope with stress. Students learn real-world skills which are not taught in schools such as working with the public and as part of a staff, jobs give them exposure to fields they may hope to enter as adults. Procuring a job enables students to understand how the world functions every day since it provides them with practical knowledge. It helps students realize what careers they have to choose and what those careers demand in terms of education, skill, and time commitment. Dropping out of school early also provides an opportunity for students to pursue their interests in non-academic fields like sports and fine arts which require rigorous training from an early age.
One has to notice that many successful entrepreneurs across the globe are school dropouts and employ thousands of school graduates. This substantiates that all children do not need compulsory education until the age of 18.
Tobacco mainly in the form of cigarettes is one of the most widely used drugs in the world. Over a billion adults legally smoke tobacco every day. The long term health costs are high for smokers themselves and for the wider community in terms of healthcare costs and lost productivity.
Do governments have a legitimate role to legislate and protect citizens from harmful effects of their decisions to smoke or are such decisions up to the individual?
Millions of people have become victims to deadly diseases like high blood pressure, asthma, stomach ulcers, insomnia, cancer of the lungs and throat etc.,triggered by smoking tobacco. Despite these harmful effects of tobacco, it has been legalized in nearly all the countries of the world.
The tobacco and cigarette manufacture industry has produced large numbers of revenue in the form of taxes to the government. This has assisted the country in its economic growth. But the government fails to realize that consumption of legalized drugs in the form of chewing tobacco and smoking cigarettes increases the healthcare costs and loses the productivity of manpower. Hence government should take initiative to educate the public of the demerits of smoking. It should also create awareness and launch programs to assist the addicts as well as the people affected by its ill-effects.
I believe that the government alone cannot curb smoking and chewing of tobacco. To control the usage of drugs, we must strive to lead a stress free life.Individuals must have the enthusiasm and zeal to restrain the usage of these drugs. People must realize that smoking not only harms their body system, but also affects the passive smokers around them. So, one must support the government by trying to enforce the rules set up by the government. People should establish non-governmental organizations to help each other liberate themselv
